ALUMNI AMBASSADORS

Parent engagement is a key component to ensuring college readiness for our students. To help determine specific needs and desires of our community. GEAR UP Birmingham (GUB) developed a student and parent ambassador program. These ambassadors not only help facilitate and strengthen the relationship between the GUB staff and families, but also aid in volunteering at events and activities throughout the year. Below are the parent ambassador responsibilities:

  • To enhance communication between parents and families and GEAR UP Birmingham
  • To provide a positive GEAR UP experiences for parents and families of GEAR UP Birmingham students.
  • To assist in disseminating information to parents and families at various GEAR UP events, as well as Birmingham City School’s events.
  • To encourage involvement and participation from parents and families that reflect GEAR UP Birmingham’s diverse student population.

Tamauri Murray

2021 Graduate of G. W. Carver High School

Tamauri has received 30+ College and University acceptances and have accumulated over $800,000 in Scholarships which includes some FULL RIDES! He was Class President, Drum Major, VP of Service for Honor Society, FBLA President, and Student Ambassador. Tamauri was also the G. W. Carver High School Class of 2021 Valedictorian.  He credits HARD WORK and perseverance to his success. He is thankful for the love and support of his mom, family, friends, and mentors for the never-ending support. Tamauri will attend Tennessee State University in the fall along with his twin sister, Tamiah.

My responsibilities as an ambassador: My responsibilities as a GEAR UP ambassador to spread the word on the great opportunities GEAR UP offers to many students within the BCS school system and most importantly be a leader to my peers and those around me.
Why I decided to become a student ambassador: I decided to become a student ambassador because GEAR UP personally has exposed me to lots of people, opportunities, and programs. I would just like to get the word out there so that others can take advantage of the opportunities.
A short fun fact about myself: I like to talk…. a lot and joke around.

Shelbe Arrington

2021 Graduate of Ramsay High School

Shelbe receives acceptances from Tulane University, University of Richmond, Rhodes College, University of Alabama, UAB, University of South Alabama, University of Memphis Richmond, University of Wooster, and Sewanee. In total, she received $227,021.00 in scholarship offers. Shelbe will be attending Tulane University in the fall and major in Political Science and Business.

My responsibilities as an ambassador: I believe that my responsibilities as a student ambassador is to lead when no one is looking, to enrich people with the knowledge GEAR UP, and share my experience of GEAR UP.
Why I decided to become a student ambassador: The reason why I chose to become a student ambassador is to help me widen my horizon on how to be a better leader and to improve my outlook on the world.
A short fun fact about myself: I am very inquisitive and I enjoy history.

 

Kenedy Johnson

2021 Graduate of Jackson-Olin High School

Kenedy’s perseverance and hunger for greatness keeps her motivated. Her aspiration to succeed and a humble attitude is credited to her success. She received over $147,000 in scholarship offers to several colleges and university around the nation. Kenedy received several honors and awards at Jackson-Olin including being Class of 2021 Valedictorian. She will attend University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa where she will double major in Psychology and Chemistry.

My responsibilities as an ambassador: I represent GEAR UP in school. I participate with fellow peers to implement more ideas so that we can broaden our future.
Why I decided to become a student ambassador: I want to tell my friends about the program. I took advantage of the camps, ACT prep and math tutoring.
A short fun fact about myself: I’m very silly. I love to make jokes.

Gabrielle Goldsmith

2021 Graduate of Wenonah High School

Gabrielle have been accepted into 26 universities and accumulated 1+ million in scholarships! As a Wenonah Lady Dragon and student ambassador, she received several awards and honors and is the Wenonah High School Class of 2021 Valedictorian. She says hard work does not go unnoticed and patience never goes unpaid. She thanks her parents, family, and friends for being the BEST support team anyone could ask for. Gabrielle will be attending Claflin University in the fall with plans to major in Biochemistry.

My responsibilities as an ambassador:
My responsibility is to lead by example, be responsible, be a great representative for GEAR UP Birmingham and to speak of opportunities for students within GEAR UP.
Why I decided to become a student ambassador: To be a voice, a leader, and for the experience.
A short fun fact about myself: I am a Pisces and I love basketball!

 

Ja’Terrius Woods

2021 Graduate of Woodlawn High School

Jaterrius has received several acceptances from many colleges and universities but chose to stay close to home and attend Lawson State Community College where he will study Graphic Design, Commercial Art & Illustration this fall. His love for game design has inspired him to study and learn more about the profession.

My responsibilities as an ambassador: My responsibility as a student ambassador is to be more social with my peers and encourage other students to take advantage of everything that GEAR UP offers.
Why I decided to become a student ambassador:I want to be a leader in my school and community and experience all the opportunities that GEAR UP offers.
A short fun fact about myself: I like all the Marvel movies with Spiderman as being my favorite.
